lower Meralco bills with these kitchen hacks
We all know how expensive the electricity bill living in Manila can be.
We all want to be practical and do as much as we can to lower it and since cooking and preparing in the kitchen is something we have to do more than once every day for the family, being more energy efficient in the kitchen will definitely help.
I won’t ask you to buy an inverter fridge or convert your appliances to more energy-efficient ones as much as that helps. I am sharing here a few tips you can do TODAY on how you can use less energy.
Heat only the exact amount of water you will be using.
What you're doing: Eyeballing water in the electric kettle, ending up boiling way more than you need (or worse, not enough and having to reheat)
Do this instead: Use your actual cup/mug to measure water before pouring into the kettle. Sounds basic, but this alone can cut kettle energy use by 30%.
Try to use the right-sized pan
What you're doing: Using that 10 inch pan for one sunny-side up egg
Do this instead: Small food = small pan. Large pan takes way more energy to heat up all that extra space you're not even using.
Use a pressure cooker
What you're doing: Avoiding it because it seems scary
Do this instead: Learn to use it! Pressure cooking uses 50-70% less energy than regular stovetop cooking. We use them in our Quisina kitchen for the creamiest beans in our chili con carne. Here's a beginner-friendly tutorial if you need it.
Thaw food in advance
What you're doing: Throwing frozen meat straight into the pan
Do this instead: Move frozen items to the fridge the night before. Cooking frozen food directly can use up to 50% more energy because your stove works harder to heat it through.
Pro tip: Our ready-to-cook meals stay fresh for 3 days in the fridge once thawed - perfect for planning ahead!
Cook in batches
What you're doing: Making single servings multiple times
Do this instead: When you're already cooking adobo, make a double batch. Takes barely any extra time or energy, but eliminates having to cook again tomorrow.
Organize your fridge and freezer
What you're doing: Leaving the fridge door open while you hunt for that hidden bagoong
Do this instead: Keep everything organized so you can grab and go. Every extra second that door is open makes your ref work harder (and costs you money).
